Coach Mitchell took the reins of the highly respected Iowa City High Little Hawk Baseball Program prior to the 2012 season. Coach Mitchell has a career record of 243 – 185, all at City High.

City High baseball has been to the sub-state finals in two of the last three seasons and last won a conference championship in 2017.

Coach Mitchell grew up in Iowa City and attended City High School graduating in 1995. Coach Mitchell was a three time first team All-State player and set many school records in baseball during his time and still maintains season records including triples,  RBI’s, Home Runs and Slugging, in addition to career records in Home Runs, RBI and Slugging. Coach Mitchell was drafted in the 40th round in the June 1995 draft to the Minnesota Twins.

Coach Mitchell forgo signing with the Twins and chose to attend the University of Iowa and play for Coach Duane Banks. Coach Mitchell set the career home run record at the University of Iowa before it was later broken. Coach Mitchell was a 1st Team All-Big Ten Performer and received Regional All American awards. Coach Mitchell was again drafted, this time in 1999 with the Toronto Blue Jays. Coach Mitchell played one year in the minor leagues. Coach Mitchell earned his Finance Degree from the University of Iowa in 1999.

Coach Mitchell is married to 1995 City High Alum, Jenni (Gable) Gable-Mitchell and has three kids. Gable, Jake and Eliza.
